Ghanaian musician Maradona Yeboah Adjei, popularly known as Guru, is contesting his disqualification from the 2024 University of Ghana Students’ Representative Council (UGSRC) elections.
Guru was disqualified because of his non-residency status as a violation of Article 4(d)(ii) of the Constitutional Instrument (CI 24) on August 16, 2024, by the UGSRC Electoral Commission.
Guru has filed a petition with the UGSRC Judicial Board, seeking an interim injunction to halt the elections scheduled for August 26, 2024, until the matter is resolved.
He argues that disqualifying non-resident students from contesting in the SRC elections is unfair and unconstitutional, particularly since the SRC’s decisions affect the entire student body.
The petition states, “TAKE NOTICE that the Plaintiff/Applicant hereby prays for an order for an interim injunction to restrain the Defendant/Respondent, their agents, servants, and any persons authorised by them from proceeding with the election pending the final determination of this suit.”
Guru contends that the UGSRC Electoral Commission lacks the mandate to interpret and enforce constitutional provisions, rendering their decision unconstitutional.
He asserts that the interpretation and enforcement of constitutional provisions fall under the jurisdiction of the Judicial Board, not the Electoral Commission.
