The Ghana League Clubs Association (GHALCA) have announced that the winner of the upcoming match between Hearts of Oak and Asante Kotoko on March 5, 2023, will be declared the champion of the 2023 President’s Cup.
Despite the match being the second encounter between the two teams in the current Ghana Premier League, GHALCA has decided to award the President’s Cup based on the outcome of this particular game, as both teams strive to catch up to Aduana Stars for the league title.
The decision to award the President’s Cup to the winning team was reached after discussions between GHALCA, the Ghana Football Association (GFA), and the government.
The match will take place at the Accra Sports Stadium and promises to be a thrilling encounter as both sides battle it out for both the President’s Cup and vital league points.

GHALCA chairman, Cudjoe Fianoo explained a few weeks ago that, the initiative was to help reduce the number of meetings between Kotoko and Hearts in a single football season as complained by some fans.
“Fans have been complaining about playing Kotoko versus Hearts games too many times within a given year, so we have proposed a format that will see the Kotoko versus Hearts league game double as the President Cup as well,” Fianoo told Akoma FM in Kumasi.
A penalty shootout will be used as a tiebreaker if the game ends in a stalemate.
Hearts of Oak are the defending champions for the President’s Cup having beaten Kotoko 2-1 to clinch the trophy last year.
