Two house helps, Patience Botwe and Sarah Agyei, have been arrested and charged with stealing millions of cedis and personal effects from the residence of Minister of Sanitation and Water Resources, Cecilia Dapaah and her husband, Daniel Osei Kuffour.
The thefts reportedly took place between July and October 2022 at the couple’s residence in Abelemkpe, a suburb of Accra. The stolen items include US$1 million, €300,000, millions of Ghana cedis, assorted clothes, handbags, perfumes, jewelry, Kente cloth, and men’s suits.
The house helps are also accused of dishonestly receiving some of the stolen items from three other individuals: Benjamin, a plumber; Kweku Botwe, a trader; and Malik Dauda, an unemployed person.
The five accused individuals appeared before an Accra Circuit Court on Thursday, July 20, 2023. However, their pleas have not yet been taken.
The case has sparked outrage on social media, with many people questioning why the minister and her husband would keep such a large amount of money in their home. Others have also expressed concern about the security of the minister’s residence.
The case is still under investigation, and it remains to be seen how the court will rule. However, the allegations have raised serious questions about the security of high-profile individuals in Ghana.
