Ghana has produced some of the finest musicians on the African continent, with its rich musical heritage giving rise to artistes whose influence has stretched beyond the country’s borders.
Among the musicians who have made a significant mark on Ghana’s music scene is highlife musician Ofori Amponsah, whose career spanning more than two decades has earned him a place among the notable names in the country’s music history.
After 27 years in the industry, the music star has reflected on his journey, saying he believes he has played his part and given music his best.
Ofori Amponsah made the remarks during an exclusive interview with YouTuber and content creator Kwadwo Sheldon, where he spoke about his career, recognition and where he believes he ranks among Ghana’s top musicians.
Asked how music has treated him after more than two decades in the industry, Ofori Amponsah described the journey as a good one while acknowledging God’s role in his career.
“It has been cool. 26-27 years in doing music and it has been a walk and a very good ride, and God has been good too,” he said.
The ‘ Emmanuella’ hitmaker was subsequently asked whether he believes he has received enough appreciation for his contribution to Ghanaian music. He responed by saying “time will tell,” explaining that he believes he has already given his best to the craft.

According to him, he has fulfilled his responsibility by giving music everything he can, leaving it to Ghanaians and music lovers to determine whether his contribution has received the recognition it deserves.
The musician was also asked where he would place himself among Ghana’s top highlife musicians and musicians in general. Without hesitation, Ofori Amponsah said he believes he deserves to be mentioned among the country’s best, particularly in conversations about the top five musicians in Ghana.
He pointed to his lengthy career and the opportunity to work with some of the biggest names in Ghanaian music as reasons for his confidence. One of the notable artistes he has worked with is the late highlife legend Daddy Lumba.
For Ofori Amponsah, his years in the industry, extensive catalogue and collaborations with established musicians have earned him a place among artistes worthy of consideration when discussions about Ghana’s greatest musical talents arise.
Despite his confidence in his contribution, however, the veteran musician left the final verdict to the public, maintaining that it is ultimately up to Ghanaians to determine where he ranks among the country’s greatest musicians. With 27 years in music behind him, Ofori Amponsah appears satisfied with the contribution he has made to the industry, leaving his body of work and the judgment of music lovers to determine his legacy.
Over the years, he has built an extensive catalogue of highlife songs, with hits including Otoolege, Odo Nwom, Rakia, Sardine, Emmanuella, Abelle and Asew among the works that have contributed to his enduring presence in Ghanaian music. His music continues to receive attention, with the musician recently teaming up with contemporary stars Stonebwoy and KiDi for a new remix of his classic song Odo Nwom, bringing a new generation of artistes onto one of his well-known highlife records.
