Chief Justice Paul Baffoe-Bonnie has pledged his commitment to ensuring that the separation of powers is duly taken into consideration.

President John Dramani Mahama swore in Justice Baffoe-Bonnie as Ghana’s new Chief Justice on Monday, November 17, 2025, at the Jubilee House in Accra.

During his swearing-in ceremony, Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie pledged to respect the separation of powers, emphasising his commitment to upholding the rule of law and strengthening judicial independence. He assured the nation of his dedication to improving access to justice and promoting transparency within the judiciary.

His swearing-in follows Parliament’s approval of his nomination on November 13, 2025, with 163 votes in favour and 69 against. Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie, who has served as Acting Chief Justice since April 22, 2025, brings extensive experience to the role, having served on the High Court, Court of Appeal, and Supreme Court.

President Mahama also praised Chief Justice Baffoe-Bonnie’s wealth of experience and long service on the Bench, citing his distinguished judicial career as a key reason for his appointment. The new Chief Justice had previously appeared before Parliament’s Appointments Committee, where he pledged open-door, bipartisan leadership and reiterated his commitment to judicial independence.
