Ghana midfielder Majeed Ashimeru has revealed he patiently waited for his first-ever European Cup goal after scoring in the UEFA Conference League on Thursday.

The 25-year-old scored Anderlecht’s second goal in their 2-0 win over AZ Alkmaar in the quarter-finals.

Ashimeru who has previously featured in the UEFA Champions League with former side RB Salzburg was yet to register his name on the scoresheet in European competitions.

However, the WAFA graduate ended his drought after his well-struck volley went past Australian goalkeeper Matt Ryan.

Speaking exclusively to 3Sports, Ashimeru said: “It feels really good to score my first goal in European Cup competitions because I have been waiting for a long time. I think it was the right moment for me to achieve this.”

Anderlecht is on the brink of becoming the first Belgian side to reach the semi-finals of a major European competition and Ashimeru believes the job isn’t yet done.

“We need to stay positive because we want to get to the semi-finals. It’s one game at a time because in football you never know what will happen. We go with our maximum and best because AZ is a strong team. We have to be ready for a big fight in Holland.”

Anderlecht travel to the Netherlands to face AZ Alkmaar on April 20 for the second leg, but before have play Belgian league leaders Genk.
