Interior Minister Ambrose Dery has commissioned Phase 1 of the newly constructed Astro-turf for the Ghana Prisons Service at its Senior Correctional Centre at Roman Ridge, Accra.
The project was constructed by Wembley Sports Construction Limited.
Member of Parliament for Ayawaso West Wuogon Constituency Lydia Seyram Alhassan joined Ambrose Dery, the Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Isaac Kofi Egyir, board member of Ghana National Gas Company (GNGC) John Darko, management members of the gas company and officials of Ghana Prisons service for the ceremony.
The Interior Minister said government has taken notice of the impact of Astro-turfs across the nation and various communities.
According to him, the Astro-turf project at the Senior Correctional Centre is one of many undertaken across the country.
He added that they are particularly designed to bring about significant improvement in sports development in the country, particularly in soccer.
“I believe that the Correctional Centre has within its walls now many Abedi Peles, Asamoah Gyans, Mohammed Kudus and this facility will help unearth similar talents just to mention a few,” he said.
On his part, the Director General of Ghana Prisons Service, Isaac Kofi Egyir, explained that the Centre would soon erect other facilities including changing rooms, washrooms, and spectator stands to make the edifice fully complete.
A Board Member of the GNGC, John Darko, who represented Chief Executive Officer Dr. Ben K. D Asante, said their desire to help fund the facility was borne out of the vision to provide a recreational facility to promote rehabilitation and social integration within the correctional facility and similar projects across the country.
He added such turf will help unearth talents for Ghana.
