Ghanaian swimmer Ivan Christopher Snowden has become the first athlete from the country to receive a combined training and educational scholarship from World Aquatics.
The scholarship, secured through the efforts of the Ghana Swimming Association (GSA), begins in August and will see the 20-year-old train at the World Aquatics Bahrain Centre of Excellence while pursuing a fully funded four-year degree at the University of Technology Bahrain (UTB).
In a letter to the GSA, World Aquatics confirmed Snowden’s selection for its 2026-27 Swimming Scholarship Programme, describing it as an opportunity to combine elite training with university education.
Snowden, a breaststroke specialist, has represented Ghana at the 2023 African Games in Accra, the Africa Aquatics Zone II Championships and the recent Africa Aquatics Championships in Algeria, where he recorded several personal bests.
The GSA believes the scholarship reflects its commitment to creating international development pathways for Ghanaian swimmers and hopes Snowden’s achievement will inspire more young athletes to pursue excellence in both sport and education.
