Jordan Ayew added another remarkable chapter to his international career on Wednesday after becoming only the fourth Ghanaian player to feature at three FIFA World Cup tournaments.
The Black Stars captain achieved the feat during Ghana’s 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match of the 2026 FIFA World Cup at BMO Field in Toronto.
The 34-year-old made his World Cup debut at the 2014 tournament in Brazil before representing Ghana again at the 2022 edition in Qatar. His appearance against Panama marked his third participation at football’s biggest event.
Ayew now joins an exclusive group of Ghanaian football legends made up of Asamoah Gyan, Sulley Muntari and his elder brother Andre Ayew, all of whom have featured at three FIFA World Cup tournaments.
The milestone was made even more significant as the Leicester City forward became Ghana’s most-capped player of all time, surpassing Andre Ayew’s previous record.
Having worn the national colours for well over a decade, Ayew has been one of the most consistent figures in the Black Stars setup, representing the country across multiple Africa Cup of Nations tournaments and World Cup campaigns.
His latest appearance came in a memorable victory for Ghana, with Caleb Yirenkyi’s late strike securing a historic 1-0 win over Panama and helping the Black Stars become Africa’s most successful nation in FIFA World Cup history.
Ayew will be hoping to add to both his appearance tally and his World Cup legacy when Ghana face England in their next Group L fixture on June 23 at Gillette Stadium.
