Inspector General of Police (IGP), Dr. George Akuffo Dampare, has garnered strong support from prominent figures, following rumours of potential removal.
Kofi Bentil, Senior Vice President of IMANI Africa, has publicly denounced attempts to oust the IGP, praising his crucial role in maintaining peace and stability during the recent elections.
In a Facebook post, Bentil commended Dampare’s “yeoman’s job,” highlighting his effective leadership during a potentially volatile period.
Echoing Bentil’s sentiments, security analyst Professor Kwesi Aning also expressed little surprise at the reports targeting IGP Dampare.
In an interview on Starr FM, Professor Aning explained that Dampare has faced consistent opposition since his appointment due to his reform efforts within the police institution and his dedication to serving the Ghanaian public.
Aning cited numerous baseless accusations leveled against the IGP, ranging from alleged unauthorized withdrawals to claims of improper promotions. He emphasized that effective leaders inevitably face resistance, and that the judgment of key decision-makers is what truly matters.
Professor Aning further asserted that removing Dampare would not be a personal loss for the IGP, but a significant setback for Ghana’s security governance.
He recounted a history of attempts to undermine Dampare, revealing that conspiracies began as soon as he assumed office.
“The day the IGP was appointed, there were conspiracies to oust him because he sorts to transform his institution and the generality of the Ghanaian public, I think he has done well. I’ve seen more than six or seven different long letters, from withdrawing money from the IGP’s account from the Bank of Ghana to making dubious promotions to everything. So even if IGP Akuffo Dampare coughs during a press conference, his detractors will say why he should cough in public. So, when you do a good job or try to do a good job, people will come after you. This is one of the litanies of the letters and accusations.”

The support from these influential voices underscores the importance of Dampare’s leadership in maintaining Ghana’s security and stability.
