Ghanaian coach Kwesi Appiah has worked wonders for the Sudanese national team in the ongoing 2026 World Cup qualifiers.
In their latest fixture, Sudan secured a massive 2-0 away victory over Mauritania in Nouakchott, which has propelled them to the top of Group B, three points clear of Senegal and DR Congo.
The visitors started the game on the front foot and were rewarded for their efforts in the 15th minute when Saif Thierry slotted the ball home after a brilliant assist from Ramadan Agab. Sudan continued to dominate the proceedings and doubled their lead in the 29th minute through an own goal by Mauritanian defender Aly Abeid.
Mauritania tried to mount a comeback in the second half, but the Sudanese defense held firm and thwarted their attempts. Coach Appiah made a few tactical substitutions in the latter stages of the game to maintain his side’s control and see out the victory.
With this win, Sudan has taken a significant step towards qualifying for the 2026 World Cup, a feat they have never achieved before.
They will next face South Sudan in their World Cup qualifier game on June 11th, and fans will be hoping that the team can maintain their impressive form under the guidance of Kwesi Appiah.
