NBA superstar LeBron James believes the ‘GOAT’ Lionel Messi’s arrival in the MLS has had a “game-changing” impact in the USA as a whole.
The sporting icon made sure that he was in attendance for Messi’s Miami debut against Cruz Azul in the Leagues Cup back in July 2023. James had a wonderful time in the stands as Messi scored a brilliant free-kick in the final minute of injury time to secure a memorable win for the Herons. After the match, the basketball legend walked up to Messi and embraced the record Ballon d’Or winner to extend a warm welcome to the United States.
The Lakers player seems to have taken a keen interest in soccer since the arrival of Messi and insisted that the 2022 World Cup winner’s arrival will be key to inspiring next-generation fans to take up the sport.
“Seeing Messi, the GOAT of soccer, honour the MLS with his presence is a total game-changer for us,” he said in a conversation with Dave McMenamin of ESPN. “His arrival not only elevates the league but also inspires a new generation of football fans in our country. It takes unparalleled dedication, work ethic and talent to achieve what Messi has, and I have nothing but respect and admiration for him. I wish him all the best.”
