Ghana secured a narrow 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup Group L match at BMO Field in Toronto on Wednesday night.

The Black Stars had to dig deep in a tough and cagey encounter that saw both teams struggle to create clear chances for long periods.

Caleb Yirenkyi emerged as the hero, scoring the decisive goal late in the game to hand Ghana all three points.

The first half was particularly slow and cautious, with Ghana failing to find their usual rhythm. Panama defended resolutely and made life difficult for the Black Stars, resulting in a goalless stalemate at the break.

Ghana improved significantly after the restart, showing greater intensity and fight. Their persistence finally paid off when Yirenkyi struck late with a close range tap-in from Thomas Asante’s cross to break the deadlock and spark wild celebrations among the Ghanaian fans in the stands.

The win gives the Black Stars a perfect start to their World Cup campaign and vital early momentum in Group L.

Ghana will now turn their attention to a huge clash against England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, while Panama face Croatia on the same day at BMO Field in Toronto.
