Ghana Premier League champions Medeama SC have eliminated Athletic Club Horoya of Guinea to qualify for the group stage of the CAF Champions League. The Mauve and Yellows achieved the great feat after securing a 4-3 aggregate win over the Guinea giants in two legs.
In a fiercely contested and thrilling encounter at the General Lansana Conte Stadium in Conakry, Medeama SC took an early lead in the first half via Jonathan Sowah, who scored a penalty kick in the 24th minute. The host came back strongly, with Ocansey Mandela leveling the scores after capitalizing on a defensive blunder from Medeama. The first half ended in a 1-1 stalemate.
Medeama SC couldn’t hold onto their lead for long in the second half. Two minutes after the break, substitute Mohammed Keita broke through the defense to score the second goal, staging a comeback for Horoya AC. The game ended with a 2-1 score in favor of the home team.
However, Medeama SC were able to cruise past Horoya to qualify for the group stage of the competition, thanks to the 3-1 lead they took in the first leg held at the Cape Coast Stadium. They become the first club to achieve that feat after Berekum Chelsea in 2012.
Medeama SC’s qualification for the CAF Champions League group stage is a historic achievement for the club and for Ghanaian football.
