The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has issued a press statement denouncing a disturbing incident that transpired on Friday, October 13, 2023, at the party’s Greater Accra Regional Office.
The regrettable incident occurred while the party was conducting vetting for aspirants in the upcoming Parliamentary primary in the Odododiodio constituency.
During the vetting process, a group of disgruntled individuals resorted to acts of vandalism and chaos. In the ensuing pandemonium, a journalist from Accra-based Citi FM/TV, Akosua Otchere, was subjected to an attack and physical assault.
The NDC in a statement signed by the National Communications Officer of the party, Sammy Gyamfi, unequivocally condemned the assault on Akosua Otchere.
The actions of those involved in attacking the journalist are deemed “highly irresponsible and run counter to the party’s commitment to upholding press freedom and maintaining a positive working relationship with the media,” parts of the statement read.
“The NDC extends its sincere apologies to journalist Akosua Otchere and the entire Citi FM/TV team for this unfortunate incident. The party affirms its dedication to democracy and peace, recognizing the crucial role of the media in nation-building. Acts of violence, especially against journalists, are entirely unacceptable”.
“The NDC acknowledges full responsibility for this regrettable occurrence and assures the public that swift measures will be taken to identify and hold the perpetrators accountable. Those found to be at fault will face appropriate disciplinary action in line with the party’s internal rules and the laws of Ghana.”
