Members of the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC) at Barekese in the Atwima Nwabiagya North constituency today confirmed public perception of deep cracks within the opposition party as they joined the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako alias Chairman Wontumi to campaign in the constituency for the ruling party.
In a show of open defiance of party orders, the NDC members in their numbers took to the streets of Barekese, the capital of the Atwima Nwabiagya North, sharing the same platform and campaigning with Chairman Wontumi much to the dismay of their leaders who were left helpless.
The NPP Ashanti Regional Chairman, Bernard Antwi Boasiako, this morning, touched base with the party at the constituency level with Atwima Nwabiagya North constituency being the first to be visited as part of the Regional tour.
At the heart of the Barekese township, the NDC members, who had gathered in front of their campaign office and dawning their party colours instantly mobbed the Chairman Wontumi and his entourage while engaging the residents in the town.
Livid by the sight of the event, the NDC leadership who were present at the office tried to discourage their members from jumping on the campaign train of their rival but the members had already found their way and chanting the NPP campaign songs.
It remains therefore to be seen of the fate of the NDC members but the ecstatic opposition party’s supporters were less worried, as they continued to do the bidding of the NPP together with the Chairman Wontumi at lorry stations and homes of the constituents.
Chairman Wontumi is on a mission to revitalize the base of the party, restore hope and confidence among NPP members and the electorates at large.
Within the constituency, he will first hold meetings with the leadership of the NPP in the constituency including the current Member of Parliament, the parliamentary candidate, District Chief Executive, Electoral Area Coordinators, Assembly members among others.
He will later inspect ongoing road projects in the constituency and hold door-to-door interaction with the electorates.
