The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has unveiled plans to engage various stakeholders in its fight against illegal mining, known locally as galamsey, as part of its commitment to environmental protection.

In a statement released on Sunday, September 15, Alhassan Suhuyini, the Minority’s Ranking Member on the Lands and Natural Resources Committee, outlined the party’s strategy to collaborate with traditional leaders, local communities, environmental organizations, and industry experts.

The NDC aims to implement sustainable solutions to address the galamsey issue, as detailed in its 2024 manifesto.

The party emphasized that a comprehensive approach is crucial for effectively tackling illegal mining and mitigating its severe impact on Ghana’s natural resources.

Critical components of this strategy include bolstering enforcement, encouraging responsible mining practices, and providing alternative livelihoods for individuals involved in illegal mining.

The NDC highlighted the significant environmental challenges galamsey poses, including water pollution, deforestation, and the degradation of farmlands, which threaten the environment and the well-being of many Ghanaians.

The party also expressed concerns regarding the perceived lack of transparency and accountability in the government’s efforts against Galamsey.

They stressed the importance of ensuring law enforcement agencies and regulatory bodies operate free from political interference.

The NDC reaffirmed its commitment to preserving Ghana’s environment for future generations.

The party believes a broad-based, inclusive approach is essential for eradicating illegal mining activities.

Suhuyini assured Ghanaians that the NDC and former President John Mahama’s future government are dedicated to engaging with civil society organizations and labour unions constructively.

He emphasized the need for comprehensive policies to address the economic factors driving illegal mining and the urgent need for environmental protection.

“We recognize more than ever the importance of collaborative efforts to find sustainable solutions that will protect our natural resources for future generations, Suhuyini stated.
