Fifth edition of Yinson Ghana Spelling Bee competition names new champions as outstanding students receive scholarships, tablets and other educational prizes.

Organised by Yinson Production Ghana in partnership with GES-Ahanta West Municipality, the Spelling Bee competition brought together 35 contestants from 25 schools in the municipality at primary and Junior High School (JHS) levels to test their spelling, reading and literacy competencies.

Winners of the fiercely contested competition were presented with plaques, certificates, exercise books, textbooks and tablet devices as prizes.

In a major push towards education in the municipality, winners and first runners up in the JHS category were awarded scholarships to sponsor their education through Senior High Schools (SHS) by Yinson Production.

At the occasion, Naa Opoku-Agyeman, managing director of Yinson Production Ghana, stressed the importance of reading in education and personal development.

“Reading opens up the door of knowledge, ignites imagination, boosts confidence and creates opportunities. Everything that is achieved in life starts with learning, and everything that you learn in life starts with reading”, she said.

She added that the competition is not just about awarding prizes but about building confidence, discipline, determination and the potential of each child.

She reiterated Yinson Production’s commitment towards promoting education in the host communities as part of their corporate social responsibility (CSR), adding that Yinson has been building the Kejabil library, providing reading materials, carrying out health outreaches and youth entrepreneurship training programmes among others.

Commenting on the programme, Edward Mensah, CSR and Local Content Manager of Yinson Production Ghana said that the company’s education interventions have been aimed at creating sustainable impact in the communities where it operates.

“Reading is not just a basic skill. It is a tool that transforms the mind and develops critical thinking and problem-solving capabilities”, he said.

He noted that according to research studies, children who have good reading ability from an early age perform well academically, become innovators and future leaders.

Ahanta West Director of Education, George Effah commended Yinson Ghana for the continued sponsorship of the competition, saying that the intervention is practically helping in the improvement of literacy levels, building confidence and promoting healthy academic competition among the learners.

He noted that the intervention has now become one of the flagship educational programmes of the municipality, developing critical thinking and communication skills among the learners.

Nana Kofi Gyimah, Chief of Adjoum in the Aowin Traditional Area commended Yinsion Ghana for its continuous support to the promotion of education and development projects in the municipality.

Besides the spelling bee competition, Yinson Ghana has donated various books such as textbooks, novels and dictionaries among others to the Kejabil Library.

The library built by the company in 2020 has become a focal point of learning for the students and the general community.

Since then, Yinson has provided more than 2,500 books in the library to promote reading and access to quality learning materials. Yinson strongly believes that developing reading habit provides the foundation of academic success and personal development

“The Spelling Bee, scholarships, library intervention and book donation are all related. We want to equip the young people with the necessary tools for success. The child can cultivate love for reading through the library, build confidence through Spelling Bee, obtain scholarship and continue his/her education. This is the kind of sustainable impact we are trying to achieve through our CSR programmes”, concluded Mr. Mensah, the CSR and Local Content Manager of the company.
