New York Red Bulls midfielder Ronald Donkor has expressed his excitement after earning his first senior national team call-up with Ghana ahead of the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers against Cte dIvoire and The Gambia. The 21-year-old, who began his career at the Jean Marc-Guillou (JMG) Academy in Mali, was included in Ghanas squad for the September international window but did not feature in either game as the Black Stars suffered back-to-back defeats to Cte dIvoire and The Gambia.Donkor said receiving the invitation was a dream come true and admitted he initially waited for the official squad announcement before fully believing he had been selected. This has been my dream to play for the national team. I didnt believe what was going to happen next, so I was like, let me wait and see what was going to happen next, Donkor told the media.I wanted them to release the list so that I could confirm that I am part of the team. Every single Ghanaian wants to play for the national team, and wearing this jersey is really good for me, and I am really happy and grateful.Donkor will also reunite with former JMG Academy colleagues Alidu Seidu and Augustine Boakye, who were ahead of him at the academy.I wanted to meet Alidu Seidu because I played with him in the same academy; he was my senior. Augustine Boakye was my senior at JMG Academy, so Im just waiting for Augustine, he said. The central midfielder has already set ambitious targets for his time with the Black Stars, saying he wants to help Ghana win games and trophies.I just want to win every single game with them, win every trophy, give everything out there for my family and the country to be proud, Donkor said.Donkor began his football career in Bamako, Mali, with JMG before moving to Guidars FC. He later joined the New York Red Bulls on a free transfer in 2022, signing a long-term contract with the Major League Soccer club.
