President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has sworn into office, Justice Gertrude Araba Essaba Torkornoo as the new Chief Justice of Ghana.
She assumes the position after the retirement of Justice Kwasi Anin Yeboah in May 2023.
Justice Torkornoo is now the third female Chief Justice in Ghana’s history, following in the footsteps of Justice Georgina Theodore Wood and Sophia Akuffo.
Parliament approved Justice Gertrude Torkornoo’s nomination on Wednesday, June 7, 2023. The swearing-in ceremony took place at the Jubilee House on Monday, June 12, 2023.
President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo expressed his confidence in Justice Torkornoo’s leadership abilities, stating that her appointment was an easy decision due to her exceptional qualities.
President Akufo-Addo further assured that Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo would be a reliable and trustworthy partner, working in close collaboration with the Judiciary and Executive to uphold the rule of law in Ghana.
He emphasized the importance of a harmonious relationship between the branches of government to establish a strong foundation for justice in the country.
