Chris Hughton’s stint as the head coach of the Ghana national football team, the Black Stars, concluded on Tuesday night after a series of lackluster performances, culminating in the team’s early exit from the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).
Ghana faced the critical task of defeating Mozambique to advance to the next stage of AFCON 2023. However, a two-goal lead was squandered, resulting in a draw and ultimately dashing the team’s hopes of redemption from their underwhelming performance in the 2021 AFCON.
Chris Hughton sacked as Ghana Black Stars coach after AFCON 2023 loss
In the aftermath of this disappointing campaign, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) announced the departure of Hughton, along with the entire technical team, including assistant coaches. While a successor has not been named, the GFA is expected to undertake the search for a new coaching staff to revive the fortunes of the Black Stars.
Having served as a technical advisor in the past, Hughton took charge of his first game in March and managed a total of 13 games during his 11-month tenure. The win-loss-draw ratio under his coaching tenure stood at 30.77%, 30.77%, and 38.46%, respectively in all competitions.
His team managed to score only 13 goals averaging a goal per match while conceding 16 times.
In 11 months of service, this is how the former Newcastle United and Norwich City manager fared for the four-time African champions.
