A growing chieftaincy dispute in Adamorobe in Ghana’s Eastern Region has sparked confusion and heightened tensions, following the installation of popular actor Mikki Osei Berko as a traditional leader.
The situation has prompted a group of elders from the Kwaakwa Asiampong Asakyire Family, recognized as the royal gate to the Adamorobe Stool, to issue an urgent call for intervention from national security authorities, warning of a potential breakdown of law and order if swift action is not taken.
Rival Claims Fuel Uncertainty
At the heart of the dispute is a rival claimant, Douglas Amoako Danquah, who the elders insist has “no legitimate claim” to the stool. According to a formal statement dated May 2, 2026, Danquah is allegedly planning an installation ceremony on May 4, a move the elders describe as illegal and in direct violation of an existing police restraining order.
The elders argue that Adamorobe already has a duly recognized traditional authority, noting that Mikki Osei Berko, now known in traditional circles as Nana Osei Boakye Yiadom II, was properly selected and installed in accordance with custom. They add that his status has been formally acknowledged by Nana Djan Kwasi I, the Aburihene.
Claims of Intimidation and Security Concerns
The statement raises serious allegations about the conduct of the rival faction. Elders claim there are “strong suspicions” of support from elements within the Eastern Regional Police Command, as well as reports of armed individuals posing as national security operatives intimidating residents.
These developments, they warn, have created an atmosphere of fear and escalating tension within the community, increasing the risk of violence if the situation is not contained.
The elders also referenced a prior meeting held on November 3, 2025, at the Aburi Palace, where Danquah allegedly admitted before traditional authorities and local government officials that he was not a chief and had no rightful claim to the stool.
Tension Mounts in Adamorobe Over Chieftaincy Dispute Involving Actor Mikki Osei Berko
Call for Immediate Intervention
In their appeal, the elders are calling on key state institutions, including the Inspector General of Police, the Criminal Investigations Department (CID), National Security, and the Ministries of Interior and Defence, to urgently step in and halt any planned installation deemed unlawful.
They caution that failure to act could endanger lives, destabilize the community, and potentially trigger a full-scale chieftaincy conflict.
Community on Edge
Adamorobe, known for its rich cultural heritage, now finds itself at a crossroads as tensions simmer. The elders have made it clear that residents are prepared to defend what they describe as their legitimate leadership and traditions.
With both sides appearing entrenched, the coming days will be critical in determining whether authorities can de-escalate the situation or if the dispute will spiral into a broader conflict.
