President John Dramani Mahama has rejected claims linking his administration to the persistent power challenges popularly known as Dumsor, insisting that Ghana currently has an adequate electricity supply.

Addressing Ghanaians in Moscow, Russia, President Mahama revealed that his government inherited approximately US$1.7 billion in outstanding debts owed to Independent Power Producers (IPPs), in addition to arrears for gas supplied from the Jubilee Field and by ENI.

However, the President disclosed that his administration has settled the outstanding debts owed to the IPPs, adding that the government is now up to date with payments for electricity supplied.

He stated that, “I’m happy to announce that we have cleared the IPP debt. That is, we are current. Any energy they supply today, we’re paying them.”

Touching on the country’s electricity situation, President Mahama further insisted that Ghana is no longer experiencing Dumsor, stressing that consumers currently have adequate power supply.

“About energy, I can report that there’s no dumsor in Ghana. Everybody has adequate power. And that’s one of the areas that has been quite dramatic in terms of its management,” he stated.
