Ghana midfielder Thomas Partey is set to become a free agent at the end of June after Villarreal decided not to activate the one-year extension option in his contract.

The 33-year-old joined the Spanish club on a one-year deal following his departure from Arsenal in the summer of 2025, with Villarreal retaining the option to extend his stay for an additional season. However, the Yellow Submarine have opted against triggering the clause, bringing Partey’s spell at the club to an end.

The decision comes while the experienced midfielder is on international duty with Ghana at the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Partey missed the Black Stars’ opening match against Panama after Canadian authorities denied him entry into the country, with an appeal against the decision proving unsuccessful.

Despite the setback, Partey enjoyed a solid campaign at Villarreal, making 32 appearances across all competitions, including five in the UEFA Champions League. He played a key role in helping the club secure a third-place finish in La Liga, their highest league position in 13 years.

With his contract expiring, Partey is now free to explore new opportunities, with interest expected from clubs across Europe and beyond.
