The management of the University of Ghana (UG) has clarified the circumstances leading to the closure of the Legon Botanical Gardens.
The closure of the recreational facility was announced on Friday, October 11 via a tweet on X.
However, the University’s management in a statement issued on October 12 said the facility is being closed down due to failure of contractual obligations by a company it entered into agreement with in 2009.
According to the statement, Mulch Company in 2009 agreed with the University to be responsible for the renovation and management of the Gardens.
The University said, hither to the agreement, Mulch has “over the years refused to fulfill its contractual obligations to the university.”
This led to several negotiations and legal issues after which the University had been granted sole control of the Gardens.
“After extensive negotiations and legal proceedings, the University has been granted control of the Botanical Gardens,” the statement added.
The University said it is committed to preserving and improving the Botanical Gardens as it has assumed full control of the facility.
“The University of Ghana assures the public that Legon Botanical Gardens will continue to operate on a green space for the community. Following a period of repairs and renovations, the Botanical Gardens will reopen to the public fulfilling its intended purpose as a vital green zone,” the University said.
