This is the extraordinary moment a woman was arrested at an Indian airport after nearly a kilogram of cocaine was found hidden beneath her wig.
The smuggler, from Entebbe in Uganda, was snared at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai via Nairobi, Kenya, on Tuesday.
A Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) official said the woman was found to be carrying 890 grams of cocaine – worth £844,699 – which she had concealed in her wig and her bra. After receiving a tip-off, the Mumbai zonal unit of the DRI laid a trap at the airport and apprehended the female passenger.
Incredible video shows the moment that security staff at the airport slowly cut open and unravelled the woman’s wig.
Using a razor, they cut through until they discover a concealed stash within the woman’s curls.
As one worker cuts away, another two help out by ripping the wig apart as the woman lies on the floor.
DRI officials said that they had ‘busted numerous modus operandi’ in the past ranging from concealment methods like sanitary pads concealment, liquid cocaine in whisky bottles, black cocaine and cocaine in moisturiser bottles.
The Times of India reports that the woman was also hiding cocaine in her bra as well as her wig.
The drugs were seized under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances Act 1985 and the woman is being held in custody while investigators probe.
The woman, from Entebbe in Uganda, was snared at the Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport in Mumbai via Nairobi, Kenya on December 19.
This is not the first time that criminals have used wigs as a way of smuggling drugs through airport security.
Last year, two women were busted trying to traffic cocaine in Colombia by sewing the drug into their wigs.
Police found 900 grams of cocaine wrapped in plastic that were sewn to the fake hair before the woman confessed to concealing 200 more grams in her genital area.
The second had 650 grams camouflaged within her wig and another 200 grams hidden wrapped around a white bag inside her vagina.
