A UK radio station briefly and mistakenly announced the death of King Charles III on air, prompting confusion among listeners before the broadcast was taken off air and later corrected.

Radio Caroline interrupted its normal programming on Tuesday, May 19, and aired a statement saying it was suspending broadcasts “following the passing of His Majesty King Charles III”. The station also played “God Save the King” before going silent for around 15 minutes.

Station manager Peter Moore later said the incident was caused by a computer error that accidentally triggered the station’s “death of a monarch” protocol. He apologised for the mistake, stressing that the system is kept on standby for official use but had been activated unintentionally.

He added that the station had restored normal programming and issued an apology to the King and listeners. The incident occurred while King Charles III and Queen Camilla were carrying out engagements in Northern Ireland.
