Former Black Queens coach Mercy Tagoe Quarcoo has called on Ghanas attackers to show greater composure in the final third as they prepare for their decisive Group D fixture against Mali at the 2026 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON).
Ghana head into Thursdays encounter in Rabat knowing a draw will guarantee qualification to the quarter-finals, while Mali need victory to overtake them and progress.
Speaking on Max FM, Tagoe said the Black Queens have the ability to create opportunities but must improve their decision-making when they get into dangerous positions.
The Oaks FC coach believes patience in front of goal could make the difference as Ghana aim to secure a place in the knockout stage.
“When they get to the final third, especially within the penalty area, they should take their time. They shouldn’t rush.”
Tagoe pointed to Ghanas missed chances against Cameroon as an example of where the team needs improvement.
“The last game we played, she had the chance to score, but she didn’t take her time. She just shot the ball against the goalkeeper, and we could not at least equalise that game.”
She urged the attackers to assess their options better when approaching the penalty area and make smarter decisions.
“When you get to the final third, you want to cross the ball or you want to plant the ball, take your time. Look at the position of the goalkeeper. Look at where your players are.”
The Black Queens scored twice in their opening win over Cape Verde but failed to find the net against Cameroon, making efficiency in attack a key focus ahead of the Mali showdown.
