On March 22, 2025, Accra’s Alisa Hotel celebrated the Ghana-Barbados connection with “We Gatherin with Wode Maya.”

The event honoured Wode Maya and the nations’ shared history, tracing back to the Transatlantic Slave Trade, which brought West Africans, particularly from the Ga, Fanti, and Ashanti regions, to Barbados.

The Master of ceremony opened the evening, welcoming distinguished guests, including High Commissioner Juliette Bynoe-Sutherland and Director of Diaspora Affairs Kofi Okyere Darko.

Wode Maya was honoured with video reels and a musical tribute by Edwin Yearwood.

Kofi Okyere Darko praised Barbados for its commitment to action and enthusiasm for future joint ventures, citing his “Rhythm On Da Runway” fashion show, and Dr. Erica Smith launched the COSCAP/Wode Maya initiative to empower creatives.

Wode Maya delivered an inspiring speech, sharing his journey and urging the audience to “start believing in dreams, not just success.”

The event concluded with gifts, thanks, dinner, and music by DJ Mexxx Adom.

‘We Gatherin’ with Wode Maya’ was a testament to the enduring bond between Ghana and Barbados, celebrating their shared history and inviting all to explore Barbados’ beauty.
