The Flagbearer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Vice President Dr Mahamudu Bawumia has said that there is a need to have a second look at how scholarship schemes are structured in Ghana.

He observed that currently, scholarships are being given for all sorts of subjects that the country does not have a skills needs for.

“I think we need to redirect scholarships to what our skills needs are. We are giving scholarships for all sorts of subjects that we don’t really have a skills need for and we need to relook at that matter.

“Pharmacies and specialization is the number one skills needs. Let us get some more scholarships for the pharmacies and we will get it done,” Dr Mahamudu Bawumia said on Thursday, April 4 when he met members of the Pharmaceutical Society of Ghana, in Accra, to throw more light on his policies for the industry and the nation.

During the meeting, he said “We’re going to change the duty structure and go into more of a flat specific duty. If you have a 40-footer container, you know how much you are paying in cedis. So, you take the exchange rate out of the matter and deal with it.

“We are also going to make sure that our duties in ports by policy cannot be higher than in Lome, which is our competitor. And right now, there’s a lot of diversion of containers to Lome because ours are higher.”

After the engagement, he further wrote on his X platform that the interaction also gave him further insight into issues of concern to members of the Society, which I pledged to include in my policy.

“With a committed political will and the right investment to support the industry, it is possible to make Ghana a pharmaceutical hub in West Africa.”
