A dramatic rescue occurred on Thursday as the Ghana Fire Service extricated a young woman named Alima from a dangerous position between the piers and deck of the flyover at the Kwame Nkrumah Interchange in front of the Odawna market.
Eyewitnesses recounted the tense moments leading to her rescue, and there was speculation about how she ended up in such a perilous situation. Some witnesses suggested she had considered jumping from the flyover, prompting intervention efforts.
“We saw a lady between the pillars overhead. People needed clarification about how she got there. There were even speculations,” one witness recounted.
Assistant Divisional Officer Grade One, Daniel Appiah of the Ghana National Fire Service (GNFS), described the rescue operation: “We were alerted by civilians about the lady stuck on the overpass. We quickly mobilized and deployed our team to the scene. After a careful operation, we managed to rescue her and handed her over to the National Ambulance Service for medical assessment.”
After her rescue, it was found that the woman had been living in the area, with personal belongings found nearby. Portia Ofori, Advanced CMT at the Circle Ambulance Station, shared insights from their interaction with the woman post-rescue.
“She disclosed that she had been residing there with a man. Despite initial communication challenges, she eventually indicated she was not distressed,” Ofori explained.
The incident has sparked discussions about urban safety and social welfare in Accra, raising concerns about individuals living in unconventional spaces under precarious conditions.
Authorities continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident to ensure the safety and well-being of all residents in the area.
