South Korea made a winning start to their 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign after coming from behind to defeat the Czech Republic 2-1 in a thrilling Group A encounter at Estadio Akron in Guadalajara.

The Czech Republic looked on course for a positive result after taking the lead through Ladislav Krejci in the 59th minute, scoring their first FIFA World Cup goal since 2006.

However, South Korea responded strongly and levelled the contest through Feyenoord midfielder Hwang In-beom, whose composed finish in the 67th minute brought the Tigers back into the game.

The comeback was completed in the closing stages when Hwang delivered a decisive cross for Oh Hyeon-gyu, who converted to seal all three points for South Korea.

The victory gives the Tigers a perfect start to their World Cup campaign, while the Czech Republic’s wait for a World Cup victory continues despite ending their long wait for a goal at the tournament.

South Korea’s win comes after the opening Group A fixture saw hosts Mexico defeat South Africa 2-0, leaving the Asian side among the early pace-setters in the group.

South Korea will next face Mexico on June 19, while the Czech Republic will look to bounce back when they take on South Africa on June 18.
