The unveiling of nominees for the 24th edition of the most prestigious Ghanaian music awards, Vodafone Ghana Music Awards (VGMA) finally took place at the Accra International Conference Centre on Saturday, March 18, 2023.
The nominees which were unveiled by the organizers – CharterHouse featured the big five categories: ‘Record of the Year’, New Artiste of the Year, Album of the Year, Vodafone Most Popular Song and the ultimate ‘Artiste Of the Year’.
The ‘Artist of the Year award is the highest and most prestigious of the awards given at the event to the artist(s) adjudged by CharterHouse, the VGMA Board and the general public as having the highest audience appeal, radio play, online streaming and popularity.
This year’s ‘Artiste of the Year’ Category, has eight heavyweights battling it out. Two gospel artistes, Joe Mettle and Piesie Esther face stiff competition from six secular musicians such as Sarkodie, Black Sherif, KiDi, King Promise and Camidoh.
Piesie Esther bagged 7 nominations, including the highly coveted overall artiste of the Year and her nomination never came as not much of a surprise as her monster hit single ‘Waye Me Yie’ swept the length and breadth of the country all through the year in review since its release on the 16th of June 2022.
After MUSIGA’s Daddy Bosco mentioned her name as one of the nominees, Piesie Esther with much elation stated, “I’m truly thankful to God Charterhouse Ghana, the VGMA board and all key industry players who found me worthy of these nominations”.
If Opiesie Esther wins, she will become the 3rd Gospel artist after Joe Mettle and Diana Hamilton to ever win the coveted prize.
The 24th Vodafone Ghana Music Awards is slated for May 13,2023.
