As I reflected on a topic to write about this week, Ghana’s upcoming general elections came to mind.
With only a few weeks remaining until this momentous day, it is crucial to shed light on our social, economic, cultural/religious, and political positions as they relate to national development. As citizens of our great nation, it must be our top priority to make informed decisions that strengthen and uplift the image of our beloved country, Ghana.
As a nationalist, I offer these insights from a balanced perspective to reinforce the democracy we cherish as a nation.
1. PEACE IS PARAMOUNT
In Africa, Ghana is respected for its hospitality, tolerance, and vibrant democracy. Our ethnic and political diversity binds us together. Despite our differences, we honour the value of peace.
Where there is an absence of strife, peace prevails. Let us give peace a chance in the upcoming elections. Ghana is known worldwide as a peace-loving country. Let’s demonstrate our maturity by selecting leaders based on open-minded decisions, not compulsion.
To this end, the Electoral Commission must continue to conduct open and transparent elections, ensuring no political party feels marginalized or cheated. There should be a fair playing field for all parties, free from pretence or prejudice.
2. ISSUE-BASED VOTING
Democracy thrives when we vote based on issues rather than ethnicity or personality. Every citizen is essential to our country’s development.
It’s important to review the manifestos presented by the various parties to help guide informed choices. For those who may not read, take time to listen to the platforms on national television and other reliable media networks.
Your vote is your power. Don’t trade your future or your children’s future for empty promises. Politicians may throw shade at their opponents, but a wise voter will make a balanced and thoughtful decision.
When we allow money to influence us to the point that we can’t do what is right, future generations will not forgive us. Ghana deserves better. Let your mind and your vote make the difference.
3. BEWARE OF FALSE PROPHECIES
Our cultural roots, which emphasize belief in divinity, often lead us to consult spiritual guidance, especially during significant decisions.
In political seasons, some people focus on prophecies. Thus, it takes a mature mind to discern true prophecy and work towards its fulfilment.
A prophecy is a divine message from God to an individual or group within a specific context and time. As a Christian, I believe God uses certain individuals to reveal His will. However, God is not the author of confusion. Some may falsely claim to speak for God, misleading others.
During election periods, various voices may claim divine messages. Remember, every word must be examined against Scripture.
If someone claims that God has declared Party A, Party B, or Party C the winner, you have the right to pray and seek God’s guidance yourself. Around this period, the decorum behind the pulpit and other platforms is much needed to instil hope and peace in our country.
No prophet controls your destiny – God does! Seeking God’s guidance directly will help avoid costly mistakes.
In other nations, false prophets have misled citizens into unwise choices, leading to turmoil. Some people may seek popularity by predicting outcomes that don’t align with God’s will.
Be wise! Every profession has its pretenders. True prophets encourage others to seek God’s direction. A biblical example is in 2 Kings 20:1-6, where prophet Isaiah prophesied king Hezekiah’s death. The king prayed, and God extended his life. This is the approach expected of believers today. Be a discerning person!
4. CIVIC EDUCATION
There should be sufficient civic education to help every voter understand their rights, responsibilities, and the voting process. This can help minimize misunderstandings, reduce invalid votes, and foster greater confidence in the election process. Citizens should be encouraged to attend forums or discussions organized by civic groups or educational institutions to broaden their understanding.
5. ACCOUNTABILITY IN LEADERSHIP
Citizens should remember that an elected president or a parliamentarian must be held accountable for their promises and actions. I encourage voters to choose leaders based on their track record and proposed policies. Candidates who demonstrate integrity, transparency, and commitment to public service should be prioritized to enrich our democracy.
6. THE ROLE OF THE MEDIA
The media, often seen as the fourth arm of government, has a responsibility to provide balanced, factual, and unbiased information. Credible media personnel can help citizens make informed decisions. The media should encourage citizens to rely on trustworthy news sources and discourage misinformation, which can mislead voters and fuel tension.
7. UNITY AFTER THE GENERAL ELECTIONS
Remember, while elections can be divisive and tense, unity of purpose is essential for long-term development. After the election results, all citizens must come together to support the elected president and parliamentarians and finally focus on Ghana’s progress. This sense of unity can drive positive change and strengthen the beauty of our democracy.
CONCLUSION
Ghana deserves better, and we cannot let short-term interests damage the image of our beautiful nation, celebrated as the “Star of Africa.”
We have only one country – Ghana. Like the ants, our decisions today will shape our future.
Unfortunately, issues requiring national unity are often viewed through partisan lenses, which finally hinder national progress.
The 2024 General Elections should lay the foundation for a brighter future for the next generation. Let’s vote wisely to make our nation stronger, wiser, and more prosperous.
