Ghanaian musician and songwriter, William Kojo Johnson known by the stage name Stay Jay has expressed his concern about the current standard of songwriting in Ghana’s music industry.
In an interview on 3FM Lounge, on November 18, Stay Jay said the art of songwriting is a herculean task, arguing that what most songwriters do currently doesn’t fit the proper description of songwriting.
Stay Jay opined that just like being in God’s ministry is a calling, songwriting is the same and one must be talented with God’s gift before perfectly excelling in it.
“Songwriting is not easy…I don’t think a lot of people are writers. They just get the vibe and just do whatever they do but if you want to be a writer, it’s a calling, you have to get the gift from God,” he told AJ Sarpong.
“Always when I am in the studios, I pray before I do a song and I don’t write a song. It just comes to my head with the beat and everything and I just tell the engineer and we are good to go,” he added.
