A statue of Ghana’s President Nana Akufo-Addo near the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi-Takoradi has been vandalized, leaving a gaping hole in its left calf. The statue, unveiled by the President himself just last month, has quickly become a topic of controversy.
The circumstances surrounding the vandalism remain unclear, and the individuals responsible have not yet been identified. The statue had already sparked public debate since its unveiling. While some praised it as a symbol of the President’s contributions to the region, others criticized it as an act of self-glorification.
Western Regional Minister Kwabena Okyere Darko-Mensah defended the statue, explaining that it was meant to honor President Akufo-Addo’s initiatives in the region. These include the rehabilitation of the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, the construction of a three-tier Sinohydro interchange, and the redevelopment of the Takoradi Market Circle. However, the incomplete state of these projects has fueled further criticism.
The police have yet to release an official statement regarding the vandalism or any potential investigation into the incident. Meanwhile, the act has provoked mixed reactions from the public.
