Ghana legend Asamoah Gyan has reacted to Caleb Yirenkyi’s maiden goal for the Black Stars following the youngster’s impressive performance in the 1-1 draw against Wales in a pre-World Cup friendly.
The FC Nordsjaelland midfielder announced himself on the international stage with a well-taken goal in Cardiff, helping Ghana secure a 1-1 draw as preparations continue for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
Shortly after the game, Gyan took to social media with a cryptic message that immediately caught the attention of Ghanaian football fans.
“Jonathan Mensah scored his first goal for Ghana against Togo in a friendly. I wasn’t in the team. Ask him what was his jersey number,” Gyan wrote, accompanied by smiling and prayer emojis.
The post was a reference to the famous number three shirt that became synonymous with the former Sunderland and Al Ain striker during his illustrious Black Stars career.
Former defender Jonathan Mensah also wore the same number when he scored his first goal for Ghana in a friendly against Togo in 2011.
With Yirenkyi also finding the net while wearing the number three jersey, many supporters viewed Gyan’s message as a symbolic passing of the torch and a recognition of the youngster’s breakthrough moment in national colours.
The goal capped another memorable chapter in Yirenkyi’s remarkable rise, with the 20-year-old continuing to impress after an outstanding season in Denmark.
The versatile midfielder is expected to play an important role for Ghana as the Black Stars prepare for the World Cup, where they will face Panama, England and Croatia in Group L.
