Atta Mills

A solemn ceremony was held Wednesday at Asomdwee Park in the heart of the Ghanaian capital of Accra to commemorate the 12th anniversary of the death of former Ghanaian President John Atta Mills.

The ceremony was well attended by a cross-section of Ghanaian society, including members of government, members of parliament, and former President John Dramani Mahama.

Mahama, who was the vice president under Mills, described Mills as a selfless and honest person whose deeds transcended the borders of Ghana.

“He was a selfless leader; he prioritized the needs of the nation over his personal and any political gain. He was passionate about lifting the vulnerable and truly allocated resources to social welfare programs,” said Mahama at the ceremony. “His reputation for integrity was widespread nationally and internationally.”

Mercy Araba Ahema Quarshie, sister of the late Ghanaian leader, described her brother as a unifier and someone who has sympathy for the needy in society.

“We have lost a great man; we think about him each and every minute. He was interested in the development of the youth in the family, and he was giving us guidance as a family,” she said.

Mills died unexpectedly at a hospital in the Ghanaian capital on July 24, 2012, aged 68. He was the first Ghanaian head of state to die in office.
