The Ghana Immigration Service (GIS) is investigating an explosion during a border patrol operation in the Hamile Sector of the Upper West Region that killed one of its officers and a tricycle rider.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Tuesday, November 3, 2026, along an unapproved route in the border area, according to a statement issued by the Service.
The GIS said a team of four officers on patrol responded to an unusual sound and intercepted a man transporting a load on a tricycle.
The rider reportedly attempted to flee as the officers approached to inspect the contents of the load.
“In the process of trying to stop him, the load exploded, resulting in the death of the tricycle rider and injuries to two officers,” the statement said.
One of the injured officers later died from his injuries, while the other is receiving emergency medical care at Nandom Hospital and is reported to be in stable condition.
The GIS said the Sector Commander and a team had visited the scene, which has since been secured.
Investigations have commenced to establish the circumstances surrounding the explosion.
The Service assured the public that border security operations in the Hamile Sector remain fully operational, adding that measures were being taken to maintain safety and security in the area.
The Service extended its condolences to the family, colleagues and friends of the deceased officer.
It also appealed to the media and the public to respect the privacy of the affected families and refrain from circulating unverified information, images or videos relating to the incident.
The GIS said further updates would be communicated as investigations progress.
