The President of Ghana Journalists Association (GJA),Mr. Albert Kwabena Dwumfuor has announced its intention to take aggressive actions to combat breaches of media rights, spurred by the high number of assaults against journalists in the country.
The GJA launched its 75th Anniversary celebration at the Labadi Beach Hotel in Accra on Wednesday, March 17, 2024.
The theme for the occasion was “75 Years of Excellence in Journalism: Honoring the Past, Embracing the Present, Shaping the Future.”
During the launch, Mr. Dwumfuor cautioned journalists to avoid unprofessional practices, noting a worrying trend fueled by factors such as a lack of appreciation for professional ethics and media ownership issues.
He explained that the media faces prosecution under laws that criminalize freedom of expression and assaults, which deviate from the rule of law.
Emphasizing the importance of the anniversary celebrations, he stated that GJA will address these issues and strive to maintain high levels of professionalism, especially during the upcoming elections.
“We shall endeavor to uphold better standards of professionalism to safeguard our cherished democracy and shape the future.”
Among the dignitaries present were the Special Guest of Honor, Minister of Works and Housing and Caretaker Minister for Information, Hon. Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, Executive Chairman of Jonah Capital, Sir Sam Jonah KBE, OSG, Former Majority Leader in Parliament, Osei Kyei Mensah Bonsu, and former Chairman of NMC, Nana Kwasi Gyan-Apenteng.
