MTN Ghana has commenced the repair and refurbishment of about 500 broken hospital beds at the Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital in Sekondi.
The repair work is part of efforts to improve healthcare delivery and help address the country’s persistent “no bed syndrome.”
The initiative, being undertaken by MTN employees in partnership with Sika Pe Adjuma Company Limited, forms part of the telecommunications company’s annual volunteerism campaign, dubbed 21 Days of Y’ello Care. The refurbishment exercise is expected to be completed within 21 days.
The project is one of several health-focused interventions being implemented nationwide under this year’s theme: “Expanding equitable health for every community: Strengthening access to quality, preventative and responsive healthcare services for underserved and remote populations.”

Speaking at the launch the project in the Western Region, the Regional Senior Manager for MTN Ghana’s South-West Business District, Prince Owusu-Nyarko, said the company has impacted lives through education, youth empowerment, digital literacy, economic inclusion and healthcare initiatives for nearly two decades through the Y’ello Care programme.
He noted that healthcare remains one of the most pressing challenges facing many communities, particularly in rural and peri-urban areas where access to quality medical services is limited.
“This year, we want to direct our attention to health, a sector where help is urgently needed. Health is everything to everyone,” he said.
According to him, MTN has over the years invested in the construction of healthcare facilities across the country and the current intervention is intended to complement those efforts while drawing attention to challenges within the healthcare system that can be addressed through collective action.
Mr. Owusu-Nyarko observed that many families continue to experience the effects of the no-bed syndrome, with patients often forced to wait in corridors or be transferred between facilities due to inadequate bed capacity.
He added that the campaign would also focus on public education on non-communicable diseases such as diabetes, hypertension and heart-related conditions to encourage healthier lifestyles and preventive healthcare practices.
The Administrator of Effia-Nkwanta Regional Hospital, Michael Danso, commended MTN for the initiative. He pointed out that hospital beds are critical infrastructure for effective healthcare delivery.
The Operations Director of Sika Pe Adjuma Company Limited, Matthew Bentho, also praised MTN for extending its impact beyond telecommunications and contributing meaningfully to healthcare and community development.
