Nationwide Blackout Caused by Power System Disturbance — GRIDCo

A widespread blackout that hit several parts of Ghana in the early hours of Wednesday, July 29, 2026, was caused by a power system disturbance on the National Interconnected Transmission System (NITS), the Ghana Grid Company Limited (GRIDCo) has confirmed.

In a statement issued on Wednesday , GRIDCo disclosed that the disturbance occurred at approximately 3:11 a.m., resulting in the simultaneous tripping of some generating plants across the national power system.

“The Ghana Grid Company LTD. (GRIDCo) wishes to inform the general public that the National Interconnected Transmission System experienced power system disturbance at approximately 3:11 a.m. on Wednesday 29th July 2026,” the company stated.

The transmission company explained that the incident led to an interruption in electricity supply, affecting customers across the country.

GRIDCo further stated that it has activated its established system restoration procedures, with engineers and system operators working continuously in collaboration with other power sector stakeholders to restore power within the shortest possible time without compromising safety.

The company also added that a comprehensive technical investigation has commenced to determine the precise cause of the system event.

The blackout, which occurred during the early hours of the day, disrupted electricity supply to homes, businesses and other facilities, with many customers taking to social media to express concerns over the situation.

GRIDCo apologised for the inconvenience caused and assured the public that efforts are ongoing to restore supply to all affected customers as quickly and safely as possible.

“We sincerely apologise for the inconvenience and appreciate the patience and understanding of the public during this period,” the statement added.

The company said it will provide further updates as more information becomes available.
