Nollywood actress Mimi Orjiekwe was arrested on Monday night by the Special Fraud Unit (SFU) in Lagos, Nigeria, on suspicion of fraud.
Orjiekwe is accused of failing to deliver on a contract worth N700 million (about $1.8 million) that she was awarded by businessman Michael Diongoli.
According to a report by blogger Cutie Julls, Diongoli paid Orjiekwe the full amount of the contract to supply specific household interior-design furniture items. However, Orjiekwe allegedly failed to deliver the furniture, and has been at large for nearly two months.
Julls also reports that Orjiekwe had previously boasted to friends that she was confident Diongoli would remain behind bars for a long time, as he had been in trouble with the Nigerian Interpol.
However, Diongoli was released by Interpol, and has been trying to get Orjiekwe to complete the contract he paid her for. However, all efforts have been unsuccessful, and Orjiekwe is suspected of using the money for other personal interests.
As a result of Diongoli’s complaint, the SFU arrested Orjiekwe on Monday night. She is currently being detained at the SFU headquarters in Ikoyi, Lagos.
Orjiekwe’s arrest comes three days after she celebrated her birthday on July 14th. She posted a series of photos on Instagram to mark the occasion, but she has not made any public statements about her arrest.
It is not yet clear what charges Orjiekwe will face, or what the outcome of her case will be. However, her arrest is a significant development in the case, and it will be interesting to see how it unfolds.
