A former Sunyani East Constituency Communications Officer of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), Mr. Maxwell Mahama, has sharply criticizing Speaker of Parliament, Alban Bagbin, describing his actions as “disingenuous and cynical” in response to the ongoing constitutional debate.
Mr. Mahama explained that a constitutional crisis arises when there is conflict or disagreement in interpreting or applying the constitution, leading to a potential breakdown in government function. He outlined that such crises may occur due to contested authority between government branches or differing interpretations of constitutional provisions, creating legal and political disputes.
In a statement copied to this reporter in Sunyani, Mr. Mahama urged Speaker Bagbin to abide by the Supreme Court’s directives rather than maintaining a stance that, he argued, is “wasting everybody’s time in this country.” According to Mr. Mahama, the Speaker’s refusal to comply with the Supreme Court’s orders has fueled a constitutional crisis, eroding public trust in national institutions and disrupting governance, potentially leading to political instability if not addressed.
Mr. Mahama challenged Speaker Bagbin’s assertion that Ghana faces no constitutional crisis, asking whether his actions truly serve the people of Ghana.
