The incident happened on the evening of October 7, 2023, during the United Showbiz program. A group of people stormed the studio, forcing the show to be halted for almost two hours.
In a press statement, the Ghana Police Service said that it had arrested 16 suspects for their involvement in the incident.
“Following the complaint from the Despite Media Group and Ministry of Information that certain people had invaded the studios of UTV this evening, the Police proceeded to the scene and arrested sixteen persons,” the statement said
The police have not released any further information about the suspects or the motive for the disruption. However, some reports have suggested that the incident may have been politically motivated.
The disruption of the live TV show has been widely condemned by journalists and media workers in Ghana.
They have described the incident as an attack on press freedom and a threat to democracy.
The police have assured the public that they are investigating the incident thoroughly and will bring the perpetrators to justice.
The suspects are currently in police custody and are assisting with investigations.
