Professor Jane Naana Opoku-Agyemang has been sworn in as Ghana’s first female vice-president in a historic ceremony held in Accra, Ghana.
The event took place on January 7, 2025, just before John Dramani Mahama was sworn in as Ghana’s president for a second term under the Fourth Republic.
Chief Justice Gertrude Torkornoo administered the Oath of Allegiance and the Vice-President’s Oath to Professor Opoku-Agyemang, marking a significant milestone in Ghana’s political history.
Professor Opoku-Agyemang served as Mr. Mahama’s running mate during the 2024 general elections, where they defeated the New Patriotic Party (NPP) candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Her appointment as vice-president is seen as a landmark achievement for women in leadership and a boost to gender equality in Ghana.
President Mahama’s victory brings him back to power after he first served as president from 2012 to 2017.
