Veteran New Zealand actor Sam Neill, best known for portraying Dr Alan Grant in the Jurassic Park film franchise, has died at the age of 78.
His family announced that he died in Sydney on Monday, saying his passing was “sudden and unexpected.” In a statement shared on his social media pages, they said he was surrounded by loved ones and “passed with the dignity that has characterised his whole life.”
The family also noted that Neill had remained cancer-free following a five-year battle with blood cancer. In April, the actor revealed he was in remission after undergoing treatment. Widely regarded as one of New Zealand’s most celebrated screen stars, Neill rose to international prominence with his performance as palaeontologist Dr Alan Grant in Steven Spielberg’s Jurassic Park, a role he reprised in several sequels.
Beyond the blockbuster franchise, Neill built a distinguished career across film and television spanning more than five decades. His notable credits included The Piano, Dead Calm, Event Horizon, Omen III: The Final Conflict and the historical drama series The Tudors. He also received Emmy Award nominations for his lead performance in the 1998 miniseries Merlin and later as narrator of the documentary series Wild New Zealand.
Neill first gained international recognition in the 1979 Australian film My Brilliant Career before becoming one of the defining faces of the Australian and New Zealand film industry’s global rise. Throughout his career, he worked alongside acclaimed actors including Meryl Streep, Nicole Kidman and Holly Hunter, earning widespread praise for his versatility across drama, thriller, horror and historical productions. His portrayal of Dr Alan Grant remains one of the most iconic performances in modern cinema.
