A total of 2,334 households in Kadjebi District, Oti Region, will benefit from the Livelihood Empowerment Against Poverty Programme (LEAP) after a validation exercise by the District Assembly and approval from the Ministry of Gender, Children and Social Protection.

The beneficiary households were selected from more than 5,000 households screened across the district. They comprise extremely poor households and persons living with severe disabilities identified through the Government’s Ghana National Household Registry (GNHR) database.

Mr Ali Hameed, a member of the LEAP Management Secretariat at the Ministry, disclosed this during a briefing session for members of the Kadjebi District LEAP Implementation Committee on the outcome of the validation exercise.

He explained that the exercise formed part of efforts to ensure transparency and fairness in the selection process and to guarantee that only eligible households benefit from the programme.

Mr Hameed stated that under the LEAP policy framework, beneficiaries are reassessed every four years to determine whether they still qualify for support.

According to him, the reassessment process allows for the enrolment of new vulnerable households while ensuring the efficient use of state resources.

He further disclosed that about 400,000 households nationwide are expected to benefit from the current phase of the LEAP Programme.

Mr Hameed urged beneficiaries to make responsible use of the support to improve the welfare of their families, particularly in the areas of education, healthcare, and nutrition.

Mr Anthony Ankutse, representing the Kadjebi District Coordinating Director and speaking on behalf of the District Chief Executive and the District Assembly, commended the LEAP Management Secretariat for the engagement.

He described the programme as a critical intervention aimed at reducing extreme poverty among vulnerable households.

Mr Ankutse reaffirmed the District Assembly’s commitment to supporting the successful implementation of the programme to ensure that deserving beneficiaries receive the needed assistance.

Some committee members appealed for continuous public education on the programme’s eligibility criteria and payment procedures to help prevent misinformation and public dissatisfaction.

The LEAP Programme is the Government’s flagship social intervention initiative designed to provide cash transfers and health insurance support to extremely poor and vulnerable households across the country.
