Ghana’s Minister of Sports and Recreation Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams has disclosed that he would have dismissed former Black Stars head coach Otto Addo much earlier if the decision had rested solely with him.
Otto Addo returned for a second spell as Ghana coach in March 2024 on a three-year contract, but came under heavy pressure after the Black Stars failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.
Despite the setback, he remained in charge and later guided Ghana to qualification for the 2026 FIFA World Cup before leaving the role just months before the tournament.
Speaking in an interview with TV3, the Sports Minister admitted he had wanted a change during the World Cup qualifying campaign.
“If the decision were mine alone, I would have sacked Otto Addo much earlier during the World Cup qualifiers,” Kofi Adams said.
The Ghana Football Association, however, maintained its confidence in Addo despite growing calls from supporters and football stakeholders for his dismissal after the AFCON qualifying disappointment.
Addo’s second spell eventually came to an end after the Black Stars endured a poor run in their pre-World Cup preparations, failing to win any of their four friendly matches, including defeats to Austria and Germany, before Carlos Queiroz was appointed to lead the team at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
