We can’t ignore Akon’s contribution to Afrobeats – Sarkodie

Award-winning Ghanaian rapper Sarkodie has praised Senegalese-American singer Akon for his pivotal role in elevating Afrobeats to global prominence.

Sarkodie credits Akon’s collaborations and influence as key to introducing the genre to a wider international audience, creating opportunities for other Afrobeats artists.

In a social media post made earlier today Friday May 30,  Sarkodie hailed Akon as a trailblasing African-American artiste who used his platform to uplift African talent.

He emphasised that Akon’s contributions to Afrobeats are undeniable and deserve recognition for fueling the genre’s global rise.

Sarkodie highlighted the rarity of high-profile artists supporting emerging African musicians, making Akon’s efforts exceptional.

He wrote, “Big shoutout to the legend AKON for his impact on Afrobeats! His role can’t be overlooked in history. Few artists at their peak would champion talent from the motherland like he did. His work laid a foundation for the genre’s global success.”

Sarkodie’s tribute follows Akon’s recent interview with Sherri Shepherd, where he reflected on his early involvement in Afrobeats. Akon shared that after releasing his 2008 album Freedom, he immersed himself in Africa’s music scene, particularly in Nigeria, contributing to the genre’s evolution.

“I was in Africa, and time flew by. After Freedom, I produced music for the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa. Then, in Nigeria, we created what you now know as Afrobeats,” he said.
